Literacy Centers Part 1

Here are a few examples of the literacy centers that students work at every day.  They work in groups in 3 or 4 for about 30 minutes focused on a specific objective and idea.

1. Poetry/Rhymes- Students read through a poem together that we have learned as a class  Then they fill in the blanks in their own version and illustrate the poem.

2. Special Reading Project-Students will work with a book project about a book we have read together in class. In this picture students are focusing on sequencing and matching pictures to words with a Brown Bear, Brown Bear project.

3. Guided Reading- Students work on different reading strategies with me by reading through a book on their reading level. Then students work on a writing project that correlates with the book.

4. Pocket Chart- Students work together to put a story in order on the pocket chart

More examples to come throughout the year!

All About Apples!

Recently we have been learning about apples and all the different ways we can eat them!
We took a taste test with Mrs. Reuther's class deciding what apple items we like as well as which type of apple is our favorite. We taste tested Red Delicious, Golden Delicious and Granny Smith.

We especially loved the apple butter and applesauce!

On Friday we worked on our baking skills with our book buddies from Ms. Foote's Class!

We have amazing book buddies.
Adding the crust!
We discovered we are great cooks!

Media Love

Our class is in love with new books.  This picture is one of my favorites because of the excitement they had about their books and the need to read them even before we left the library. This was our first trip to visit Mrs. Husketh and they would not wait to get there.  That is what makes great readers; motivation and excitement!

*We will be going to the Media Center every Friday so please make sure they have brought their library book back so they can check out a new one.  The more you read to your child, the more they will want to read!

*I will start to let the students walk to the library in the mornings to pick out new books with a partner.  The more often they bring their book back the more books they will get to check out!

*Mrs. Husketh, our amazing Media specialist has a great blog, http://clubmediacenter.blogspot.com.  Be sure to check it out!

We Share Everything!

Our class read the story We Share Everything to get ready for our year together.

The students discussed and wrote about what they could share with each other.

A New Year with Amazing Students!

Hi Kindergarten Families,

I am excited about this year and the journey I will be taking with your family.  Please check this website frequently to see what the kids are doing in class.

Here are some ways to use our blog:

*Check for new books on my shelfari to discuss with your child.  These are books we have read in class and would be great to check out from the library for reinforcement.

*Look at the new websites placed on the side for great videos, songs and educational websites for students to use at home.  These will be websites they have already encountered or worked with in the classroom.

*The weekly newsletter will be posted in the side link for you to keep updated even when the paper copy goes missing!

*And of course check for new posts including pictures and videos of the kids at work!
